18. App updates

The app checks for a new version at startup and every few hours. If there is one, New version x.y.z appears on the home screen and in the workspace bar, with What’s new and:

• Download — downloads the installer (with progress and an integrity check).
• Open the installer — when the download finishes the app does not close by itself; it closes when you press this button, and the help text says so. If an agent is working in any window, the “An agent is working” notice appears first: Cancel does not open the installer and the app stays open; Stop and quit stops the turns, opens the installer and closes the app (without repeating the notice). With no turns running, no notice appears. The app closes about 0.8 seconds after opening the installer:
  • macOS: the .dmg opens; drag the app to Applications to replace the current one and open it again.
  • Windows: the installer opens; follow its steps.
  • Linux: the downloaded AppImage is shown in its folder; replace the current one with it and open it.
  • If the installer cannot be opened, the app does not close.
• Later and Skip this version.

The What’s new window opens by itself the first time the app detects each new version, without you pressing anything. It waits until no agent is answering (in any chat, including “Aside”) and the app is visible, and it appears only in the window you are using. When it opens it does not activate any button or touch what you were typing in the chat; when you close it, you are back where you were. It opens by itself only once per version (the app remembers it even if you close it): after Later it does not open by itself again, but the New version x.y.z button is still there to open it whenever you want; after Skip this version it does not appear again for that version. If an even newer version comes out, it opens by itself again, once.

If an update is required (your version is no longer compatible), the app says so and you have to update to keep working.
